Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to your friend. Explain why he should stay.

OR Talk to his parents. Explain why they should let him move.

Sample Answer (Talk to Parents – CLB 12)

Hello Mr. and Mrs. Sharma, I wanted to talk to you about your son’s plan to move to another city for his new job. I understand that you want him to stay close to home, but this opportunity could be very important for his career because larger cities usually offer better job opportunities and professional growth. Also, living in a new city can help him become more independent and gain valuable life experience. For example, my cousin moved to another city for work a few years ago, and he gained great experience and was promoted within a short time. Maybe you could allow him to try this opportunity for a year and see how things go. I believe this could be very beneficial for his future.

TASK 6 – QUESTION 2

Situation:

Your coworker wants to work overtime every weekend, but his family thinks he should spend more time at home.

Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to your coworker. Explain why he should spend more time with family.

OR Talk to his family. Explain why he should work overtime.

Sample Answer (Talk to Coworker – CLB 12)

Hey, I wanted to talk to you about your plan to work overtime every weekend. I understand that earning extra money is always helpful, but I think you should spend more time with your family because work is important, but family time is also very valuable and cannot be replaced. Also, if you work all the time without rest, you might feel stressed and exhausted, which could affect your health and productivity. For example, one of my colleagues worked overtime continuously for several months and eventually became very tired and unhappy. Maybe you could work overtime occasionally instead of every weekend so you can maintain a better work-life balance. I think that would be a healthier and smarter decision.

TASK 6 – QUESTION 3

Situation:

Your friend wants to buy a new car, but his parents think he should save money for a house.

Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to your friend. Explain why he should save money.

OR Talk to his parents. Explain why he should buy the car.

Sample Answer (Talk to Friend – CLB 12)

Hey, I wanted to talk to you about your plan to buy a new car. I know buying a car is exciting and convenient, but I think saving money for a house would be a much better decision because a house is a long-term investment and its value usually increases over time. Also, cars lose value very quickly and require a lot of maintenance and expenses. For example, my brother bought an expensive car a few years ago, and after some time he realized he had spent too much money on something that was losing value. Maybe you could continue using public transportation for now and focus on saving money for your future home. I think that would be a smarter financial decision.

EITHER Talk to your sister. Explain why she should study business.

OR Talk to your parents. Explain why she should study art.

Sample Answer (Talk to Parents – CLB 12)

Mom and Dad, I wanted to talk to you about my sister’s decision to study art instead of business. I understand that you are worried about her career and future job opportunities, but I believe she should study art because she is very passionate and talented in this field. Also, when people choose a career they truly enjoy, they are more motivated and usually become more successful in the long term. For example, one of my friends studied design even though his parents wanted him to study engineering, and now he is very successful and happy with his career. Maybe we should support her decision and allow her to follow her passion. I believe she will work very hard and build a successful career in her field.

Your friend wants to start a small business, but his partner thinks it is too risky.

Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to your friend. Explain why starting a business is risky.

OR Talk to his partner. Explain why starting the business is a good idea.

Sample (Talk to Friend – Casual Persuasive Tone)

Hey, I really wanted to talk to you about your plan to start a business. Honestly, I think it’s an exciting idea, but at the same time, it could be quite risky right now because starting a business usually requires a lot of money and there’s no guarantee of profit in the beginning. Also, running a business can be very stressful and time-consuming, especially in the first year. For example, my cousin started a small business last year, and he didn’t make any profit for several months, which was really stressful for him financially. Maybe you could start the business part-time first while keeping your job so you don’t take a big financial risk. I just want you to be safe and successful, not stressed and struggling.

Your colleague wants to work from home permanently, but the manager wants everyone in the office.

Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to your colleague. Explain why working in the office is better.

OR Talk to the manager. Explain why your colleague should work from home.

Sample (Talk to Manager – Semi-Formal Tone)

Hello, I wanted to discuss the possibility of allowing John to work from home permanently. I understand that having employees in the office makes communication easier, but working from home can actually improve productivity because employees can focus better without office distractions. Also, remote work can increase job satisfaction, which often leads to better performance and long-term employee retention. For example, many companies that introduced remote work policies noticed higher productivity and employee satisfaction. Perhaps we could allow him to work from home on a trial basis and evaluate his performance after a few months. I believe this could be beneficial for both the employee and the company.

Sample (Talk to Parents – Polite Persuasive Tone)

Hello Uncle and Auntie, I wanted to talk to you about his plan to travel abroad for a year. I understand that you want him to continue working and build his career, but traveling can also be a very valuable experience because it helps people learn new cultures, become independent, and gain confidence. Also, this may be the best time for him to travel since he does not have major responsibilities yet. For example, one of my friends traveled for a year before continuing his career, and he said it completely changed his perspective and helped him grow as a person. Maybe you could allow him to travel for a limited time and then return to work afterward. I think this experience could be very beneficial for his personal growth.

Your neighbor wants to build a large garage, but other neighbors think it will block the view.

Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to your neighbor. Explain why he should not build the garage.

OR Talk to the neighbors. Explain why they should allow the garage.

Sample (Talk to Neighbor – Semi-Formal Tone)

Hello, I wanted to talk to you about your plan to build a large garage next to your house. I understand that you need more space for your vehicles, but the garage might block the view and sunlight for other neighbors, which could cause some problems in the neighborhood. Also, if the neighbors are unhappy, it might create unnecessary conflict and tension in the community. For example, in another neighborhood nearby, a similar construction caused disputes between neighbors for a long time. Maybe you could consider building a smaller garage or adjusting the design so it doesn’t block the view. I think that would be a better solution for everyone.

OR Talk to the roommate. Explain why they should allow the dog.

Sample (Talk to Friend – Casual Persuasive)

Hey, I wanted to talk to you about your plan to adopt a dog. I know you really love dogs and it would make you very happy, but I honestly think this might not be the best idea right now because you share the apartment with someone who is not comfortable with having a pet. Also, taking care of a dog requires a lot of time, responsibility, and money, and I know you are already very busy with work. For example, one of my friends adopted a dog while working full-time, and later he struggled because he didn’t have enough time to take care of it properly. Maybe you could wait until you move to your own place and then adopt a dog. I think that would be a better and more responsible decision.

I understand that you want him to keep working because he currently has a stable job, but higher education can open more career opportunities and help him earn more in the future. Also, if he studies now, he may qualify for better positions and long-term career growth. For example, one of my colleagues left his job to complete his master’s degree, and after graduating he got a much better job with a higher salary. Maybe you could support him for a few years while he completes his education. I believe this decision could greatly benefit his future career.

EITHER Talk to your friend. Explain why he cannot move in.

OR Talk to your roommate. Explain why your friend should move in.

Sample (Talk to Roommate – Casual Persuasive but Polite)

Hey, I wanted to talk to you about my friend moving into our apartment. I understand that you are worried about sharing the space with another person, but he is very responsible and quiet, so I don’t think he will cause any problems. Also, if he moves in, the rent and utility costs will be divided among three people, which will reduce our expenses. For example, when I lived with three roommates before, we saved a lot of money on rent and bills. Maybe we could try this arrangement for a few months and see how it goes. If it doesn’t work, we can always reconsider later. I think it could actually be beneficial for all of us.

Your brother wants to buy an expensive phone, but your parents think he should save the money.

Choose ONE:

EITHER Talk to your brother. Explain why he should save money.

OR Talk to your parents. Explain why he should buy the phone.

Sample (Talk to Brother – Casual Persuasive)

Hey, I wanted to talk to you about buying that expensive phone. I know it looks really cool and has a lot of great features, but I honestly think you should save that money instead because phones lose value very quickly and a new model comes out every year. Also, if you save this money, you could use it later for something more important like education, travel, or even a car. For example, I remember when I bought an expensive phone a few years ago, and after a year it was worth much less and I regretted spending so much money on it. Maybe you could buy a more affordable phone and save the rest of the money. I think that would be a smarter decision.

Hello Uncle and Auntie, I wanted to talk to you about his plan to join a gym. I understand that exercising at home is convenient and cheaper, but going to a gym can be more effective because there is professional equipment and a proper environment for exercise. Also, being in a gym motivates people to exercise regularly because they see others working hard and staying fit. For example, when I joined a gym last year, I became much more consistent with my workouts compared to when I exercised at home. Maybe he could try the gym for a few months and see if it helps him stay more disciplined. I believe this could be very beneficial for his health and fitness.

EITHER Talk to your colleague. Explain why the trip is unnecessary.

OR Talk to the manager. Explain why the team trip is a good idea.

Sample (Talk to Manager – Formal persuasive tone)

Hello, I wanted to discuss the idea of organizing a team trip for our department. I understand that it may seem unnecessary and could involve additional expenses, but team activities can actually improve teamwork, communication, and overall employee morale. Also, when employees have a chance to interact outside the workplace, they often build stronger relationships, which can improve collaboration and productivity at work. For example, many companies organize team-building activities because they have seen improvements in teamwork and employee satisfaction afterward. Perhaps we could organize a short and budget-friendly trip instead of a long one. I believe this could be beneficial for the team and the company.

OR Talk to his parents. Explain why he should change majors.

Sample (Talk to Parents – Persuasive but respectful)

Hello Uncle and Auntie, I wanted to talk to you about his decision to change his university major. I understand that you want him to continue his current program because changing majors might delay his graduation, but I think he should switch to a subject that truly interests him because people usually perform better and become more successful when they study something they are passionate about. Also, if he continues studying something he doesn’t enjoy, he might lose motivation and struggle academically. For example, one of my friends changed his major in his second year, and later he became very successful in his new field because he was genuinely interested in it. Maybe we should support his decision so he can build a career he actually enjoys. I believe this will be better for his long-term future.

I understand that you want him to live at home to save money and stay close to family, but living independently can help him become more responsible and learn important life skills such as managing finances and daily responsibilities. Also, if his workplace or university is in the city, living closer could save him a lot of travel time and reduce stress. For example, one of my friends moved closer to his workplace, and it improved his daily routine and productivity significantly. Maybe you could allow him to try living independently for some time and see how it goes. I believe this experience could help him grow personally and professionally.

Hello, I wanted to talk to you about his request for a long vacation. I understand that the office is very busy right now and it might be difficult to manage the workload without him, but taking a break can actually improve employee productivity and motivation in the long term. Also, if employees are not allowed to take leave when they need it, they may feel stressed and less satisfied with their job. For example, in many companies employees are encouraged to take vacations because it helps them return to work more focused and productive. Maybe we could temporarily distribute his tasks among the team or hire temporary help during his absence. I believe this could be a good solution for both the company and the employee.

Hey, I wanted to talk to you about your plan to buy a motorcycle. I know motorcycles are exciting and convenient, especially for traffic, but I honestly think it could be quite dangerous because motorcycles offer very little protection compared to cars. Also, accidents involving motorcycles are usually more serious, and even a small mistake on the road can be very risky. For example, one of my friends had a motorcycle accident last year, and even though it wasn’t very serious, he was injured and couldn’t work for several weeks. Maybe you could consider buying a small car instead, which would be much safer and still convenient for transportation. I just want you to stay safe.

I completely understand that you want to spend time with your friends and enjoy yourself, but the loud music and noise late at night are disturbing other neighbors in the building. Also, some people have work early in the morning, so the noise makes it difficult for them to sleep. For example, one of the neighbors told me that their children wake up because of the noise during the night. Maybe you could reduce the volume of the music or finish the parties earlier in the evening so it doesn’t disturb others. I think that would be a fair solution for everyone.

Also, earning his own money can make him more independent and financially responsible. For example, many students work part-time during university and still perform very well academically while gaining valuable work experience. Maybe he could work only a few hours per week so his studies are not affected. I believe this balance between work and study could be very beneficial for his future.
