Celpip Listening 2026 Tip#2 Part 2: Daily Life Conversations

Celpip Listening 2026 Tip#2 Part 2: Daily Life Conversations

How to Identify Relationships Quickly and Accurately

---

Introduction

Many CELPIP candidates focus heavily on vocabulary and miss one of the most important skills tested in Listening Part 2:

Identifying the relationship between speakers.

The good news is that CELPIP rarely hides the relationship.

In most conversations, the speakers reveal who they are within the first few seconds through their vocabulary, tone, situation, and purpose.

Strong CLB 11–12 listeners do not wait until the end of the conversation.

They identify the relationship early and use that information to predict the rest of the conversation.

---

What Is Tested in Part 2?

In Daily Life Conversations, CELPIP frequently asks:

What is the relationship between the speakers?

Who is the man/woman?

Why are they speaking?

Where are they likely speaking?

What is the speaker's role?

To answer these questions correctly, you must listen for clues rather than individual words.

---

The CLB 12 Shortcut Formula

PLACE + TOPIC + TONE = RELATIONSHIP

1. Where are they?

Possible clues:

2. What are they discussing?

3. How are they speaking?

CLB 12 Prediction Strategy

Strong listeners predict before hearing the answer.

Assignment

Professor

Deadline

Before the question appears, you should already be thinking:

"This is probably a teacher-student conversation."

Prediction improves accuracy.

Don't

✘ Wait until the conversation ends.

✘ Focus only on names.

✘ Translate every word.

✘ Change your answer because of one unfamiliar word.

Advanced CLB 12 Strategy

Instead of asking:

"Who are they?"

Ask:

Who has authority?

Who needs help?

Who is providing a service?

Who is requesting permission?

Who is giving instructions?

These questions often reveal the answer immediately.

---

Practice Activity

Identify the relationship.

Dialogue 1

Woman:

Can I book a table for four people this Saturday?

Man:

Certainly. What time would you prefer?

Answer:

Customer ↔ Restaurant Employee

 Final Advice

Part 2 is not a vocabulary test.

It is a relationship-detection test.

The fastest way to identify relationships is to focus on:

PLACE

TOPIC

TONE

If you master these three elements, you can often identify the relationship within the first few seconds of the conversation and answer confidently before the question even appears.
