CELPIP Reading Task 4 – Real Solving Formula

CELPIP Reading Task 4 – Real Solving Formula

First understand what Task 4 really tests:

Task 4 =

Opinions

Agreement / Disagreement

Main idea

Inference

Vocabulary

Matching statements to people

The Real Formula for Task 4

Use M.A.P.S Method

This is a proper solving method, not just structure.

M – Main idea of article

A – Attitude of each person

P – Point (main idea) of each person

S – Support (example/reason they give)

If you find these for each person → you can answer most questions

How To Use MAPS (Step-by-Step)

When you see Task 4 passage:

Step 1 – Read article quickly → Find MAIN IDEA

Ask:

What is the issue?

What is the topic?

Is writer positive or negative?

Write in head: Article = Topic + Opinion

Step 2 – Read Comment A → Find Attitude + Point

Ask:

Agree or disagree?

What is their main reason?

Example: Person A:

> I support building bike lanes because pollution will decrease.

So: Attitude → Agree

Point → Reduce pollution

Support → Environment benefit

Step 3 – Read Comment B → Same thing

Attitude → Disagree

Point → Too expensive

Support → Waste money

Step 4 – Now Questions Become Easy

Because you already made this table:

Person Attitude Point Support

Writer Neutral/positive Bike lanes Environment

A Agree Reduce pollution Health

B Disagree Too expensive Money

C Agree Tourism Economy

Most answers come from this table.

Why This Works (Very Important)

Task 4 questions usually ask:

Question Type What to look for

Main idea Article main idea

Who agrees Attitude

Who thinks expensive Point

Who mentions health Support

Inference Attitude + Point

Vocabulary Word meaning

True statement Support detail

So MAPS covers everything.

Alternate Formula (Second Method)

Use T.A.C.O Method

T – Topic

A – Agree / Disagree

C – Cause / Reason

O – Opinion difference

This is easier for weak students.

Example Passage (Real Style)

Article:

The city plans to build more parks. Some people think this will improve quality of life, while others believe the money should be spent on roads and transportation.

Comment A:

I support building more parks because people need green spaces to relax and exercise.

Comment B:

I disagree. Traffic is a bigger problem, and the city should invest in roads instead.

Apply MAPS:

Person Attitude Point Support

Writer Neutral Parks vs roads City spending

A Agree Parks good Relax, exercise

B Disagree Roads better Traffic problem

Now answer questions easily.

Example Questions

Q1: Who supports building parks?

→ Person A

Q2: Who thinks traffic is a bigger problem?

→ Person B

Q3: What is the main topic?

→ City spending: parks vs roads

Q4: Who would agree that green spaces improve health?

→ Person A

See? You don’t reread passage again.

Do’s for Task 4

Do:

Read article first

Identify main idea

Identify each person’s opinion

Look for contrast words (however, but, although)

Make mental MAPS table

Eliminate wrong answers

Look for synonyms not exact words

Don’ts for Task 4

Don’t:

Read line by line slowly

Try to understand every word

Choose option with same words blindly

Ignore writer opinion

Ignore contrast words

Spend too long on vocabulary question

Panic if passage long
